Little is known of the author of this diary, a Methodist minister and itinerant preacher who gives his name on the title page as J. W. Lively M.D. Although the initials he places after his name would indicate that he was a physician, he does not seem to have been a practicing physician during the period covered by this journal. Lively was apparently born in Arkansas, moving later to Texas (he records in his diary a visit to both states while on one of his circuit preaching journeys). ...

From a small beginning in May 1932, the Methodist Crusaders Choir, then with 75 choristers, was hurriedly formed and made its first public appearance at the General Conference Meetings of the Methodist Church of Australasia. It is primarily a hymn-singing choir, and the devoted members feel that the main purpose in their coming together is to spread the gospel message of the Church by means of song.
